Refined Nets

After doing my net development I decided on the shape that I wanted to take forward. I want for the curved pyramid, this shape is very different and I didn't really want straight and boring lines. I want to go from something that is elegant and something that you'd like to look at over and over again.

I have designed several different nets with the same base shape but have added extra pieces to make the overall idea more exciting and something that you'd like to look at and fiddle with.

At first I took the basic net that I started with a chose to add some out side piece to form a slight flower shape, giving the original net a bit more body.

As we have to incorporate 4 key pieces of information into our net I decided that I didn't want these to be easily seen so I thought about adding pieces of curled paper onto the inside which when pulled apart would be able to reveal some of my information.

I added small items into the centre of the pyramid one to see what it would look like having something in the centre and seeing whether I could add that to my final design as I would like lots of different flaps and areas to my net to work on the 'opening experience' as that is something I'd like to focus on. The inner row of curled paper I feel isn't in tight enough meaning you can easily see what is in the centre, but this isn't a totally bad thing as it means people will defiantly open it up and move the pieces.

My third idea was also having piece of paper in the centre of the pyramid but having then facing inwards and then making sure you are able to lift them up a bit like in my first design to revel something. I think the triangles need to be smaller so the stick upwards more making people want to lift them up rather than having them resting on the bottom when you open the pyramid up. So more like a pop up.

Richard Sweeney

Richard Sweeney is an artist from England and has always had a talent for 3D sculpture, which he mainly uses paper. He has done a wide range of work from large sculptures for the window in the shop Selfridges and also one from the Festival of Arts event in Italy in 2007.

His pieces of work that caught my eye was his lager paper forms. These are large 3D circular forms each made from different shapes. I felt that this was something good for me to look at and help develop my net ideas.

The size of these pieces help with there impact, but as mine is going to be from people to retrieve information off and would be sent. I feel my net needs to able to be handled and big enough to be picked up and easily looked at.

Kirsten Hassenfield

Kirsten Hassenfield is an artist from New York and most of her work is created from paper. The piece of her work that court my eye was her paper handing installations and sculptures.

Her work is created from thin translucent pieces of paper. One of her works is named 'Dans La Lune' meaning daydreaming. Each piece she has hand cut, folded and curved.

She has also been known for her large jewellery pieces, creating jewel shapes from paper. With the used of very fine paper she is able to use light to give the impression that the pieces are shining like real jewels would.

The way Hassenfield has been able to make a simple piece of paper look important and worth something I find really interesting, she has made it into a wonderful piece of work that you can't stop looking at and it really draws you eye and each time you look you find something new.

Net Development

From the first few nets I did I decided that I wanted to make them a bit more interesting rather than a simple box. But these designs still need more work but as a first go it's given me ideas in how to work on the opening experience of the package.

This net idea is my favourite, it make the opening experience more exciting, but I need to work on adding my parts to it so I can reveal my 4 key piece of information in a more exciting way than I have presented it at the moment. But it is a starting point.

B&B studio

I have done a lot of research into different design companies. This company called B&B studio is the sort of place I'd like to work and also send my self promotional material too. They have designed packaging for a range of different products from drinks to dog biscuits. Packaging is defiantly an area of graphic design that I'd love to go into.

B&B studio stick to quite traditional ways for presenting a product but also uses a modern twist and this is the way I like to work. And they also look at the product helping with the design instead of what they want the product to be seen as.

Standing Out

There are hundreds and hundreds of different branding out there and many of them are very similar. So, how do you make your self stand out from the crowd?

Vera Wang
Marc Jacobs

Perfume are something that can be really impractical but it doesn't matter as its main use is to sit on a table and look pretty. So many well know brands have started to really make there products stand out by making the lid to the bottle really interesting and making the bottle something you want as well so the perfume its self.

Coca Cola is one of the largest brands around the world. And is packaging and branding helps with this keeping it iconic with there main colour red. Having something that the brand has stuck too means that they haven't got mixed in with everyone else.

TOMS have basically appeared from no where in the last few years. They have sold thousands and thousands of pairs which has also meant children in less fortunate countries have been able to have a pair of Toms too. This idea is amazing, making people help people in different countries buy getting something they can use and wear.

For me, I'd love my packaging to be something that isn't seen as another box but like the perfume bottles is something to keep and use.

3D Nets

I decided to try out some easy 3D nets so I can get a feel for how packaging can be formed and also to get me thinking about what sort of shape I'd like mine to me. I'd like mine to be something at when you look at it it can be easily remembered and not just another box.
